While we wait for the blessed hope--the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ. Titus 2:13

WRISTBANDS, RIBBONS AND BUMPER STICKERS

In 1973, Tony Orlando recorded a song written by Irwin Levine and L. Russell Brown titled, “Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree.” Then in December 1979, Penelope Laingen, wife of one of the Iran hostages, tied a yellow ribbon around a tree at her Maryland home. The ribbon symbolized that we had not forgotten the American hostages and that we were praying for and working toward their release. We were helpless to participate in rescuing the hostages but we could all tie on a yellow ribbon and feel better. This started the “Awareness Ribbon” craze.
As Christians, we have bought into the whole “Symbolism over Substance” philosophy. It’s much easier to wear a WWJD bracelet, an inspirational t-shirt or a cross lapel pin than actually speak to someone about Jesus. Have you ever “honked because you loved Jesus,” only to have that person cuss you out or flash an obscene gesture? “I don’t get involved in any of that symbolism,” you may say, but have you ever told a needy person, “I’ll pray for you” as you walk swiftly past? Another of my favorite feel-good phrases is, “If there is anything I can do, give me a call.” Have you ever received a call? Probably not, but at least you offered.
The Bible tells us that Jesus went about DOING good. It’s laughable to think that His disciples could have evangelized the world by wearing a red, white or purple ribbon. It may be easier, give you a warm, fuzzy feeling because you “care,’ and make your neighbor more aware, but there is still no cure, many children went to bed hungry last night, another baby was eliminated because a mother felt there was no alternative, and your neighbor still doesn’t know that Jesus loves her. The next time someone asks me to wear a ribbon, share the color of my underwear or post something on Facebook to declare my faith, I think I will examine the cause and put a little substance to the symbolism by actually getting involved. On second thought, why wait until someone asks?

IF ONLY............

It started in the garden! I’m not sure of the year since we are not told how long it took Eve’s dissatisfaction to bring her to the point of standing in front of the forbidden. Sometimes we imagine that Eve was strolling through the garden, happened to pass by the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil when Satan began talking to her. Then on a whim, Eve reached out grabbed an apple and took a bite, shared it with her husband and brought sin on the world. I believe it was more of a process. The Bible doesn’t tell us how many times Satan confronted her before she began to entertain the thought, “If Only!”
Satan’s tactics have not changed since Adam and Eve’s exodus from the garden, so I think this might be a more accurate scenario. One beautiful day Eve was enjoying a moment of solitude, which should have been easy since she only had Adam to think of, but it seems a “woman’s work is never done!” She should really gather fresh boughs for their bed, but maybe it would be ok for one night, fortunately, there was no laundry to finish. Soon it would be suppertime and she hadn’t picked out anything for the meal. Would Adam be happy with fruit salad again or should they start with a wonderful vegetable soup? If only she had some new recipes. Satan began to whisper and Eve began to wonder…If Only!!! Genesis 3:6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate. And the SIN OF DISSATISFACTION came into the world.
What is the “If Only” that Satan has been whispering in your ear? It may be, If only I had…, If only I had not…., If only that was mine… Your “If only” may be a different spouse, another career, the house down the street, your bosses automobile, Bill Gate’s money, a model’s body or another Christian’s gifts. We all have different “If Only’s” we desire. James 1:14 says, “But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. 15 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.” How do we combat this trick of Satan? Is there a way to avoid reaching for the fruit?

BTW
We are so afraid of becoming disconnected that we won’t leave home without a cell phone. We even have a device to fit over our ear so we can continue the connection while driving, doing housework, or walking in the mall. Even away on vacation, we search for the nearest “hot spot”, wi-fi, or hotel customer provided computer to check our email or Facebook page. Our vehicles are equipped with OnStar Technology and global positioning devices so that we know where we are at all times and can connect for emergency services instantly. Has all of this brought us closer together? I am ashamed to say it has not. I still can’t tell you the name of the neighbor, I wave to every morning as I’m dialing my cell phone to stay connected.
Studies have shown that we are actually losing our ability to communicate effectively though we communicate more frequently. Children no longer understand grammar, spelling or punctuation rules. It really isn’t necessary because a whole new language has been developed to assist the texting addiction. BTW 143 UR2GTBT CYL. If you understand what I just wrote welcome to the language of texting. I have even started using the ever popular LOL at the end of sentences because the laughter in my eyes softening the sarcasm I just typed cannot be translated any other way. Does anyone know the symbol for a hug? (((H))). No more cheek to cheek or arms holding you tight; just type 3 pair of parenthesis with an H in the middle and I’ll know you love me.
God desires a little cheek to cheek or a personal conversation with us; maybe a time of just sitting quietly and soaking up His presence. Instead we give God a 143 and a TU as we rush out the door texting our husband CYL. We wonder why the day doesn’t go as planned and it seems we there’s another battle at every turn. PRAYING FOR OUR PRESIDENT
President Obama was not my candidate, but he is my president and I am commanded by God to pray for him and the rest of the government. I refuse to follow the example set by the Democrats over the last 8 years. I will not spew hate and disdain that was directed at President Bush every day of his presidency. Although I am commanded to pray for him, I am not commanded to support his policies and ideas. As long as his policies line up with the Word of God, I will defend them against criticism, however, when a Presidential Order or other edict is issued that undermines the moral authority established by God, there is no defense.
President Obama went to work yesterday to overturn many of the orders signed by his predecessor. This is his right as president and most presidents do this on their first few days in office. We need to examine the orders that have been overturned to determine the tone he has established for his administration. For seven years, since 9/11, the United States has not experienced another terror attack on our soil. This was due to President Bush’s aggressive war and policies on terror. One of the first orders signed by President Obama is to close Gitmo and release terrorists into our state side prisons, giving them the same rights as American citizens. These are the citizens whom the terrorists seek to annihilate. There are other orders that have been overturned; making it more difficult to extract information from these same terrorists and gather intelligence from technology channels. Our image has become more important than our safety.
Another order that has been overturned is that of funding abortions in foreign countries. No longer satisfied with killing the American unborn, our tax dollars will now go to kill foreign unborn. Judgment cannot be far behind. God has been long suffering but the day is coming when those who have ordered the slaughter of the innocent will be harshly dealt with. President Obama’s signature on this document did not come as a surprise to America, it was promised during the campaign. Those who voted for him, preferring their own selfish desire over the protection of life, are willing accomplices to these murders.
Yes, I will pray for our new president. I will pray that before he makes too many more rash decisions that he will seek the Face of God, Godly counsel, and then prayerfully issue his orders. I pray that there will be a real revival in America that will raise up Godly men and women that will stand for right in the face of adversity. I pray that God will not lift his Hand of Blessing from American but that we will humble ourselves, pray and turn from our wicked ways. Most of all I pray that we will all examine our hearts and remove anything that is not like God. He is coming soon; we’ve got to be ready.

INVESTMENTS DOWN? LOOK UP!!!
Of course, the news that took center stage this week was the financial news. There was a government takeover of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac; Investment Giants were allowed to “go under” while others were shored up by mega billion dollar government loans. AIG, the big 3 auto companies, individuals who greedily had to have a bigger and better house were all given temporary hope based on billions of dollars to be confiscated from hard-working, responsible Americans.
One news network advertised a televised special this way, “Market madness, banks going bust, financial crisis grips Wall Street, Which candidate can clean up this mess?” It is not surprising that doctors are prescribing increasing amounts of nerve pills, ulcer pills, sleeping pills, anti-depressants, therapy sessions or anything that will help alleviate the fear and anxiety that threatens to overwhelm us on a daily basis. Americans are searching for answers.
I have a hope, I have an answer; it is Jesus Christ. Believers should not be caught unaware; the Bible is full of warnings regarding the headlines we read every day. In Luke 1:26, Jesus tells his disciples there would be Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken. God never gives us a warning without giving us a promise of His faithfulness. The following are some of the precious promises we have been given.
Hebrews 12:27
And this word, Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain. 28Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear: 29For our God is a consuming fire.
Lamentations 3:21
This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope. 22It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. 23They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. 24The LORD is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.
Psalms 37:18
The Lord knoweth the days of the upright: and their inheritance shall be forever.
19 They shall not be ashamed in the evil time: and in the days of famine they shall be satisfied.
20 But the wicked shall perish, and the enemies of the LORD shall be as the fat of lambs: they shall consume; into smoke shall they consume away.
21 The wicked borroweth, and payeth not again: but the righteous showeth mercy, and giveth.
22 For such as be blessed of him shall inherit the earth; and they that be cursed of him shall be cut off.
23 The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way.
24 Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the LORD upholdeth him with his hand.
25 I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.
26 He is ever merciful, and lendeth; and his seed is blessed
Psalms 37:39
But the salvation of the righteous is of the LORD: he is their strength in the time of trouble.
40 And the LORD shall help them, and deliver them: he shall deliver them from the wicked, and save them, because they trust in him.
Economic experts will try to unravel our tangled financial state, the Presidential candidates will continue to offer a band aid to cover a gaping wound, and mankind will chase after every ungodly pursuit imaginable to quell the fear that grips them, but we can have hope. If you have placed your confidence in Jesus Christ and understand that all you possess is a blessing from God, you can stand strong in a chaotic world. You can have a smile on your face and a song in your heart knowing that, “All I have needed Thy hand hath provided; Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!”

CERTAIN DEATH

The scenario that sticks in my mind was captured on a cell phone and transmitted live to Fox News. The caller was a bartender at a local bar on the island. She said there had been 10 people lined up waiting to get in when she had opened earlier. By 3:00 p.m., Texas time, over 20 people had gathered to party, drink and wait out the storm. They were laughing, dancing, drinking from glasses and turning up bottles to keep the rowdy atmosphere rocking. The news anchor asked the caller if she had heard the warning of “Certain Death.” The bartender said, “I hope that doesn’t happen. We’ll pray and ask God to keep us safe.” The reporter then urged the bartender to warn the patrons and at least tell them that if they stayed in the bar, they would die. “Please tell them, they are going to die,” he said. The bartender said she would tell them and hung up. I heard on a later report that the customers had second thoughts and later dispersed. If only we could get the same response as we sound the alarm to a dying world.
Matthew 24: 38 For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, 39And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

CAN TWO WALK TOGETHER?
Mom:
I found this article on MSN about dating and different religions. I thought the article would be short. A simple phrase of don't do it would suffice. They had a panel of ministers and answered common questions. I am going to put excerpts of the article in here with my comments in red.
First the qualifications of the panel
Rabbi Lev Baesh, director, Resource Center for Jewish Clergy, www.InterfaithFamily.com
Rev. Laurie Sue Brockway, an interfaith minister
Alana Klein, director of communications and publications, Marymount Manhattan College; she and her fiancé are of different faiths
Stephen Miller, Christian expert/writer, ONE: The Digital Dialog
Pastor Bob Moeller, host, For Better, For Worse, For Keeps
Dorette Saunders, senior editor, education unit, Nida Institute for Biblical Scholarship at the American Bible Society
I especially like Rev. Laurie Sue Brockway, an interfaith minister. What does that mean? My guess is she believes in "spirituality" and just like all rivers lead to the ocean, all beliefs lead to God. Yuck. Well, let's get into what she thinks.
Q. What if we’re afraid that dating someone outside our faith will diminish it?
Brockway: My philosophy is that love between two people adds a dimension of holiness to our world that cannot be categorized by religion or culture, and that a temple can be created wherever there is love. I believe in soul mates, and I feel that the couples who are meant to be together have the ability to see each other through the eyes of the soul. That allows many feelings about differences to melt away. Or at least allows them to walk together without having to agree on all things spiritual.
Interesting. I like how she uses the word differences so casually. If by different she means one walking with God for eternity and the other burning in a lifeless Hell, yeah that's pretty different.
Now a gem from Stephen Miller, a "Christian Expert". Note, it does not say he is a Christian, just an expert on one. One could argue Satan is an expert in Christianity, but I have a feeling that this group doesn't really believe in Satan. Let's have Stephen Miller answer a question.
Q: When we start dating someone of a different faith, what’s the first thing a person should do?
Miller: Listen to each other with an open mind. There are wise teachings and doggone dumb teachings in every major religion. As you talk, it’s OK to disagree. You can count on disagreeing. A lot. But there’s no need to be judgmental. That’s God’s job, not ours.
I think our society knows "judge not, lest ye be judged" more than any other scripture. Whenever they want to do something stupid, they just throw that scripture out there. Imagine a Christian dating a Jew. One says, "the Messiah that was prophesied has come and if you believe in Him you can have everlasting life, if not you will burn in Hell". The other says, "No. The Messiah you are basing your faith in was a false prophet and anyone who believes in him will not go to Heaven." Then they decide to go have a nice dinner and put there pesky differences about eternal salvation aside for a moment. After all, it's okay to disagree. Why not wait until you have children to pick this disagreement up again.
Lastly, we have Dorette Sanders, an editor for a biblical studies institute. Note, it also never says she is a Christian or religious Jew. Let's see how she answers the same question that good old Stephen Miller answered.
Q: When we start dating someone of a different faith, what’s the first thing a person should do?
Sanders: Open up and educate each other as to your faith practices. Does an Episcopalian really know what a Mormon believes? Does a Jew understand Catholic teachings? Can an unbeliever uphold the values of a Christian? In order to coexist harmoniously, couples may either agree not to bring up religion or agree to respectfully disagree. The problem with the latter is that such a response will eventually put a strain on their relationship as it becomes more solidified. Or in other cases, one party compromises to the point where his or her “faith” no longer looks the same. It is for this reason that the Bible, in its wisdom, knowing the stresses of everyday life, cautions that we should not be yoked unequally.
I am going to give her credit on a couple of points. (Edited) She points out that simply agreeing to disagree in the long run will not work and is the only one to bring up the Bible mentioning being unequally yoked. However, it is my understanding that the Bible does not caution about being unequally yoked, it says "Don't do it. "
It is amazing to me that people think with a little open mindedness they can compromise on religion. If you are a true believer, there is Heaven and Hell, not compromise. Why not go to a Pastor that cares about your soul for advice. A pastor that is willing to tell someone they are wrong and going down a sinful path. I bet some of these so called experts have never told anyone that they are wrong. And what about children? Can anyone who truly is a Christian be okay with their child being brought up Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, or anything other than Christian? If so, I have to say they are not a Christian.
Anyway, I found this interesting and the answers to be ridiculous. I hope you enjoyed it.

FOR ONLY ONE
God loves individual people. Today in his message Steven reminded us about the value of ONE soul to the Lord. The Gospel of Mark gives us the account of the demon possessed man at Gadarene. Jesus was preaching to the multitudes on one side of the sea. He left, got into a boat, went across the sea, cast the demons out of ONE man and returned back to the multitudes. He gave a parable of the Good Shepherd who would leave the ninety and nine to go seek after the ONE lost sheep. Many times Jesus was moved with compassion for ONE person out of the crowd of people surrounding Him. I am reminded of this song by Ray Boltz:
For only one, He would have suffered and given up His life
For only one He’d have born the shame and made the sacrifice
For God so loved the whole world, He gave His only Son
But I believe He’d have done the same for only one.
There are false teachings declaring that because Jesus died once for all and since we can do nothing to earn our salvation, all mankind is saved. Repentance, faith, and surrendering our life to Him do not enter into this teaching and cheapens His sacrifice on Calvary. Jesus died for the whole world; however, salvation is not corporate but available through obedience on an individual basis. He truly is a personal savior who desires a personal relationship; ONE on ONE.

MOMENTS OF TRUTH

Mackenzie is 3 ½ and every event in her life is exciting and celebrated. She loves parties and all the trappings that go with them, especially decorating the cake. What better way to teach her about the resurrection than throw a RESURRECTION PARTY.
Oh that we would feel the excitement and joy of that first Easter. That we would forget about a new dress, white shoes, chocolate bunnies, and jelly beans to declare HALLELUJAH, JESUS IS ALIVE.

RELEVANCE AT THE EXPENSE OF REVERENCE
Churches incorporate secular music into their worship services, spend hours on a spectacular multi-media presentation and a few minutes on a “relative” sermon. It is “hip” to use shocking language, gimmicks and games all to appeal and appear relevant to a dying world hurtling toward an eternity without God. There was a time when the Minister was one of the most respected men in the community, however, scandal and shady dealings have caused the ministry to become fodder for late night television.
As a child I attended a “non-relevant church.” Children were not ushered into state of the art nurseries, we learned to behave in church, worship God and listen to the sermon. The preaching didn’t stroke anyone’s ego; it wasn’t delivered with eloquent speech or in a dignified manner. I’m sure by today’s standards, the sermons were not “relevant” but they were powerful. Lives were transformed; sinners would either run to the altar or out the back door. No one left unchanged or commented, “What a lovely speech.” We clapped and raised our hands, tears flowed and noses ran, hair didn’t stay in neatly coifed up-dos, we called each other brother & sister, preachers sweated and hollered, legs went to sleep and knees got calloused from kneeling so long at the altar; yes, we actually had altars.
Entertainment? The entertainment was top of the line. There was nothing more glorious than the singing. I expected the trumpet to sound at any minute when Sis. Haggard played the piano and sang “God’s Going to Shake This World Again.” The Welchel boys tuning their guitars and singing “down home” harmony made you want to stomp your feet. There were songs like “I’ll Live On;”I was sure the real name was “Olive Vaughn,” in honor of Sis. Vaughn, “Won’t We Have A Time When We Get Over Yonder”, and “Heaven’s Jubilee” Then of course Bro. Johnson’s favorite, page number 400, “Hold the Fort” , when we would all wave a handkerchief or Kleenex as we sang the last line of the refrain. It was always exciting to march around the church in victory to the strains of “When the Saints Go Marching In.” Some danced, fell under the Power of God, spun around, jumped, and ran the aisles. Now, that’s entertainment!!!!!
People stood in the congregation to testify of the goodness of God in their everyday lives. Some spoke of powerful conversions and prayed they would “go the last mile of the way.” Who can forget Bro. Johnson’s rendition of “The Old Violin” delivered in a broken Swedish accent, testifying of the change God had made in his life. We knew what it felt like to feel the awesome presence of God when Sis. Frieda gave a message in tongues, then wait with a holy hush for another precious saint to proclaim the interpretation.
The church was a haven for everyone from the least to the greatest. A refuge to Sis. King who would parade into Sunday School with her brood following close behind. Her family was the only one that took up more room than ours. She had 15 kids, mom and dad had 6. Needless to say, Sis. King usually beat mom to win the prize on Mother’s Day for the “Mom with the most kids present.” A place of acceptance to the man who sat on the back row and would get so excited he would let out a Hallelujah that sounded like “Hot dawg.” It was a source of comfort to Bro. Clutter whose comb-over would flop in the wind. It was the place back in 1966 where I was baptized in the Name of Jesus and filled with the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Tell all these people their church wasn’t relevant. There were no streaming backgrounds and flashing lights, we used hymnals. Starbucks coffee wasn’t offered but nothing could beat the fried chicken at church potlucks. Shocking words and illustrations didn’t flow from the pulpit, the minister stood with reverent awe as he delivered the words to the congregation he had received directly from God.
The sermons have become more polished, our music has progressed from the old hymns to modern praise & worship, solos and choir renditions are preselected and pre-practiced and we have trained greeters and ushers to welcome our guests as we reach out to meet the needs of our changing world. In the midst of all our sophistication let us not lose sight of the fact that God is a Holy God and all honor and glory belongs to Him. Let us not become Relevant at the expense of Reverence.
I welcome comments and memories of how church has been relevant to your life. email them to me at susan.niswonger@sbcglobal.net. I would like to include them in a later blog.

TRAGEDY OR SIN?
While watching the breaking story, I was struck by the choice of words used to describe the reporters’ view of the actions. Words echoed by all the networks and cable news channels over and over until they became a mantra picked up by political allies and foes, pundits and the man on the street. His elicit activities were described as a “Personal and Political Tragedy.” It disturbs me tremendously that such corruption from governmental leaders is downplayed to a tragedy. Although the dictionary meaning of the word tragedy would apply in this circumstance, it tends to absolve the perpetrator of his responsibility and bring the crime down to just an unfortunate set of events.
Alan M. Dershowitz stated, “It’s no big deal. So what a married man goes to a prostitute.” This famous attorney also wrote a book called Rights from Wrongs: A Secular Theory of the Origins of Rights. Rights, he argues, do not come from God, nature, logic, or law alone. They arise out of particular experiences with injustice. His book also states that rights are too important to be left only to theological discourse. I’m sure Mr. Dershowitz believes that because of Mr. Spitzer’s previous experience bringing down such corruption, it was his “right” to sample such delights for himself.
A New York City resident made the observation, “So, a man goes to a prostitute, the Governor’s political maneuverings were more of a crime and a sin.” Some said they thought prostitution should not be illegal anyway, it is our “right” to sell our bodies, they belong to us. Government can legalize anything that will pass congress. Legalizing an action only makes it allowed not moral. Finally, Greta Van Susteren on Fox News had the courage to say “This is not a personal tragedy.” Her statement was, “This is a very smart man who knew exactly what he was doing and I have very little sympathy for him.” I agree with Greta, let’s call it what it is, Moral Failure or better yet, SIN.
If any of you remember the sitcom Happy Days, the Fonz had trouble with one word when describing himself. He just couldn’t make his mouth say the word ‘wrong.” No matter how hard he tried, his tongue would freeze and his lips would not cooperate. Sin has become that word. We will use words like mistake, tragedy, slip up, lapse or error in judgment, or any other phrase to prevent our mouths from forming the word Sin. We are afraid if we use the word sin to describe someone’s actions, that same word might be used against us.
Sin is ugly, it is selfish and devastating. Sin is not victimless and just a personal incidence. The tragedy in this whole sordid episode is not the action but the consequence to the action. It is a tragedy that another person has allowed Satan to deceive them into throwing away reputation and position for a moment’s pleasure. It is a tragedy that sin has destroyed another family. It is a tragedy that a wife will never regain the trust in a husband that she once enjoyed. It is a tragedy that a father will never again achieve hero status in the eyes of his three daughters. It is a tragedy that these same daughters will carry a corrupt view of men the rest of their lives. It is a tragedy that a nation has become so used to human failure that we say “So what” in the face of sin.
I Peter 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour. There is not one of us that is immune to sin. We must be on constant watch and stay full of the Holy Ghost. It is only through the power of Jesus Christ and His shed blood that our story will not become a tragedy.

LIVIN' WITHOUT DISSIN'
I am currently reading Honor’s Reward by John Bevere. He states we are commanded to honor others, not because it is deserved but because it is honoring God. According to the dictionary, Honor is high respect for the worth of something or someone; deference, reverence or homage. The opposite is Dishonor, which means to treat in a disrespectful or demeaning manner; to bring shame or disgrace.
In the world we seldom see “everyday respect” for other people. Men no longer hold doors for ladies, children no longer stand so their elders may sit, our civil authorities are referred to as “pigs”, teachers are disobeyed and showered with profanity and even our church leaders have become the butt of distasteful jokes on late night talk shows. We are a nation of disrespect and dishonor.
Children learn to honor others by the way we show honor, even when it is not deserved. If Dad is constantly berating Mom and Mom ridicules Dad at every turn, children began to believe that neither parent is worthy of honor. Most television shows, especially “sitcoms” portray Dad as a bumbling idiot and Mom going her own way without regard for dad or the children. Disrespectful behavior is constantly reinforced.
Parents consistently take sides against teachers and pastors. Children began to believe that no one has a right to point out that they could possibly be wrong, let alone correct their mistakes. This belief is passed on through generations, until we raise up a group of people that have no regard for any authority. It moves up the ladder, even reaching the President of the United States. If he is not of your political party, he is referred to disdainfully as "Bill" or "George." The Bible says that God bestows authority. Even when the person dishonors the authority bestowed upon him we have no excuse to show disrespect. When our children observe us showing honor and respect to those who deserve it the least, they will once again learn to respect and honor those in their world.
When did it begin? Where did it all start? I feel it all began when we stopped honoring and fearing God. He is now referred to as “the man upstairs” or “JC” or even worse, “my homie.” When we once again refer to God as My Savior and The Almighty God; if we ever fall on our knees and cry “Holy, Holy, Holy; when we finally make Him the center of our lives, we will begin to honor others as God has commanded.
If you have "dissed" the people God has put in authority over you or the people who may be under you, make a decision today to go out of your way to honor everyone you meet with a smile, a kind word or a helping hand. Remember you are doing it as unto the Lord. If you continue this practice, it will become a habit and you will find yourself “LIVIN’ WITHOUT DISSIN”.

AMERICAN POLITICS PART III

America has become a nation of wide–mouthed babies crying “Feed me, NOW!!!” The poll-savvy candidates pick up on this immediately and the laundry list grows longer. One candidate even had the audacity in a campaign ad to portray the list as beautifully wrapped Christmas presents. The usual gifts of universal health care and a clean environment were under the tree, but the one that set me back was Universal Pre-K. I sent one of my sons to preschool, on my dime, the other one was unable to attend. I found no difference in their education, ability to learn or progress in school. I think this is a veiled attempt to secure Universal Daycare which allows the government to have more say in the way we raise our children. If this is the road America is on, I would like to put in a couple of requests. Today we have about 3 inches of snow, I feel for all northern states there should be Universal Snow Shoveling. My dishes need to be washed and the dog shed on the carpet, I have a right to Universal House Cleaning. Why stop now, give me Universal Prepared Meals and Universal Clean Laundry.
We have also become a nation of victims. In the New Hampshire Primary, a candidate said something had to be done about Predatory student loan companies. I agree!!!! Why should my kids have to pay back student loans? I know we signed a promissory note, but they preyed on our emotional desire that our kids go to college and our lack of funds. After all, why should my kids get a job to help pay for their education? This could cause irreversible stress and anxiety problems. How dare Mastercard/Visa allow me to run up $40,000 in credit card debt. They should have realized I couldn’t afford all those things I just had to have right now. Why should I have to save my money and wait until I can pay cash? By then it won’t be the latest craze. Gas is too expensive to fill up my Hummer, Medicare rates are increasing, and I can hardly afford to eat and at the same time pay for my cell phone. Why should I have to choose?
Many candidates like to compare themselves to Ronald Reagan or John F. Kennedy. I still enjoy the inspirational speeches we heard from Reagan. He told us “we will have opportunities beyond anything we’ve ever known:” that we are a “Shining City on a Hill” and of course, “Mr. Gorbachev, Tear down that Wall.” It was also Reagan who said, “A baby is an alimentary canal with a loud voice at one end and no responsibility at the other” and “Government does not solve problems; it subsidizes them.” Perhaps he had a vision of America in 2008. Although I am not a fan of Kennedy, who can forget the line, “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.”
Give me a candidate once again that believes in all the things that made America great. One that takes us back to the pioneering spirit of our founders and the values of hard work, personal responsibility and independence. If one exists and ever runs for office, I will run to the polls; I will fight the huge lines that will form, waiting for their chance to cast a vote.
I would like to end with another great quote by Ronald Reagan:

AMERICAN POLITICS PART II

I’m not ready to endorse anyone yet, but remove McCain (too smug and condescending), Guliani (character issues, not strong pro-life) and of course Ron Paul (too looney tooney).
As promised here is my struggle in coming to terms with the death penalty. I believe we are all made in the image of God, that life is precious and unless you are defending yourself, your family or country, the end of a life is God’s decision. There are many crimes that are so heinous that the perpetrator does not deserve to live. Though we have may have not committed a crime we are all fallen and deserve death. I am so thankful for Redemption. If there is redemption for me there can be redemption for anyone. Only God gets to decide who has gone so far they cannot be redeemed. Since I am not a sociologist or a theologian, the article below written by my son Steven to Father Jonathan at Fox News says what I feel much more eloquently.
Father Jonathan,
I enjoyed your article on capital punishment. Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts. As I read, a few thoughts of my own came to mind, so I thought I would share. I hope you enjoy. (I will tell you as a disclaimer of sorts that I am an evangelical Christian minister. That may help you read my comments from the intended perspective.)
My observation is that we, as humans and especially as Christians, are a dichotomy of views. One set of views originates from our natural, sinful pull toward carnal fulfillment, and the other from the transformed, Spirit-enlightened understanding of the love of God toward man.
As this pertains to capital punishment, I find that the Christian world all too often mistakes carnal justice for God's justice, as well as our vengeance for God's. In the end, are we not taught that ultimate vengeance is God's alone? My carnal mind wants to dictate what is "deserved" by evil men and women and then see that sentence carried out. It seems that I conveniently forget that if not for the blood of Christ, my sense of"justice" would require a similar fate for myself. I'm reminded that by the grace of God and the blood of Christ, I do not receive what I deserve, but find mercy so that I may be restored to the place of God's purpose in my creation. Why would I desire anything less for another human being, perhaps no more or less sinful and deserving of punishment than myself? It seems a very dangerous road to travel when we begin assigning severity to sin in a spiritual sense, thereby justifying our own transgressions by contrast. I only see that road ending in a spiritual self-delusion of grandeur. Definitely not the mind of God.
When I prayerfully consider the issue of life, I find that God's love in me yearns for those who have transgressed, no matter the transgression, to find redemption so that they may not perish without God's gift of salvation. Of course, my carnal mind's demand for justice in the face of man's atrocities fights this most "unnatural" proclivity toward mercy and leaves me desperately asking God to reveal more of His nature in my life.
While I fully believe that man's justice should be carried out upon those who break the law, I find myself wondering why I would want anyone to die, especially if it means that in the process they lose the gift that God desires for each of us. That gift is His incredible offer of salvation and restoration. In conclusion, I'm left with a single question regarding all of life'sissues: Why do many Christians feel that they have the right and freedom to compartmentalize life into any areas where the will of God is not considered, nor is it welcomed?
I believe that Christians of all denominations are similar in this way...many are committed to their relationship with God and want to consider Him in all aspects of life, and many only want a convenient relationship with an impersonal and unmeddling deity. If the people of God truly want to change the world and see the will of God done on Earth as it is in Heaven, then I believe we must begin to consider God's will and His Word in every aspect of our lives and our philosophies. We must put down the insistence of our carnal mind to run the show, and be transformed by the Spirit (Romans12:2). As far as I understand in my limited enlightenment, hatred and anger toward the unenlightened is not part of God's transformation of the human soul. For the Christian, there should be no belief established or action committed that is not somehow affected by the presence of God in our life.
Although I have strong political views, I am not an activist. My humanity supports capital punishment for reasons of deterrence and retribution, but as I have shared, this seems to be greatly at odds with my relationship with God and the love that He has placed within me. As such, I desire greatly toturn over every aspect of my life to Him, knowing that my life and mind in His control is what is best.
Thanks for reading. Any comments you have would be very welcome. I truly enjoy your column.
God bless!

HOORAY FOR AMERICAN POLITICS

Although it isn’t a popular opinion, I have to confess, I love the political season. We even have Election Night parties with great food, moans, groans and cheers. My friends think I’m crazy, my family, thankfully, understand and share in my sentiments. I find it energizing and exhilarating. I enjoy every debate, both Republican and Democrat. I even enjoy the ads, the negativity and the thinly veiled barbs thrown at opponents. I sift through all the rhetoric, look at past records, but the true test of character is in the candidates’ response to the opponents “attacks” during both debates and advertising.
Now I will probably offend someone. I do not understand how a committed Christian can vote for a Democrat. As stated above, I vote Republican. I believe that the moral issues of life and marriage have to be considered over economic issues. I cannot trust an individual who does not value human life above all else with my money. It is very hard to believe a “man’s word” who thinks nothing of cheating on his wife and children. Finally, anyone who will not stand for marriage and against gay rights does not deserve my mark next to his name. Economically speaking, the best help for the poor and under-privileged is to provide a friendly atmosphere to corporations, thus creating better jobs and opportunities. I also take exception to anyone stealing my hard earned money to fund projects that do not benefit me. As a Christian, I generously give to worthwhile charities and do not consider the government to be one of them.
I have to admit, the Republican platform is not perfect. The two biggest issues I have a problem reconciling are gun control and the death penalty. Here are my feelings on gun control; I will discuss the death penalty in a separate posting. The official platform is against gun control, citing the 2nd amendment, The Right to Bear Arms. I am a big believe in all the civil rights we are guaranteed by the Constitution. I think, if you choose, you have a right to own a gun for hunting and protection. I am for registering, waiting periods, and back ground checks. I do not understand why anyone needs or should want an assault weapon. The argument states that gun controls do not prevent criminals from obtaining weapons. I agree, it is ridiculous to assume that anyone wanting to commit a crime would go through legal channels to obtain a gun. In my opinion the gun controls are to protect good people from doing stupid things.
Whether you agree with me or not, whether you are Republican, Democrat, or Independent, please go vote. As a citizen of this great country, it is your right and your voice. If you don’t exercise your right to vote, don’t bother exercising your right to free speech, it has lost all credibility. We have enough actionless complainers.

THINK ON THESE THINGS
Mr. Mancina’s problem is that he is focusing on the half-empty aspect of events from 2007. Someone looking at the glass as half-full might mention that even the Democrats are finally admitting that the surge is working, 97% of American borrowers pay their mortgage payments on time every month, and companies care enough to issue recalls instead of cover-ups that would harm the younger population. Perhaps we can use the seamier side of life to teach our children that hitting a baseball does not make one a hero, even leaders make wrong choices that result in unpleasant consequences and there are much more important things in life than the latest video game craze.
In January 2007, I lost my job due to the sale of my company. I chose to look at this as an opportunity to spend more time with my family and volunteer at the local homeless shelter. In October my mother-in-law passed away. While we miss her greatly, we rejoice that she is no longer suffering and is at peace due to her faith in God. The Saturday before Christmas, my sister and brother-in-law were involved in what could have been a serious accident. Although the truck was totaled, we paused to give thanks that they escaped with only sore muscles and a few bruises. It is really all about how you choose to view events.
The Apostle Paul said it best in Philippians 4:8, Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
As I look back at 2007, I choose to be thankful for the many blessings and learn valuable lessons from the unpleasant events. Standing at the brink of 2008, I anticipate a year filled with success and failure, happiness and sorrow, always with the assurance that tomorrow the sun will still be shining and the flowers will eventually bloom.

IT STARTED WITH A CABBAGE PATCH DOLL OR WAS IT A BABY IN A MANGER?

The year was 1983, a chubby cheeked baby doll complete with yarn hair and a birth certificate was introduced to the world. It quickly became the top wish on every little girls Christmas list. Mothers and Fathers would rise up early and stand in long lines for the chance to bring home one of these highly coveted dolls. It became an item on the nightly news; reports of mother’s fighting over the last one on the shelf; newspaper ads offering the more affluent shoppers an opportunity to buy their own Cabbage Patch for a mere $500 to $1,000.
1995 brought Tickle Me Elmo. In the 21st century our wishes have moved into the electronic age. Our wish lists include HD flat screen televisions, I-Phones and something called Wii. Fox News reported that in one town more than a hundred people lined up to have the opportunity to purchase 1 of 18 Wii game consoles. A security guard selected the lucky shoppers to enter the store. The losers stomped off angry that their Christmas dreams were shattered.
Thankfully, these greedy, self-serving tales of Christmas are not reflective of the entire population. There have also been many reports of individuals and groups who have been able to capture the true Spirit of Christmas; the blessing we receive in giving. A church gives each congregant $50 to invest in something or someone; a bank bestows a $1,000 Christmas bonus on each employee with the stipulation that it must be used for a good cause, it cannot be given to a co-worker or family member and the employee is also given a video camera to document what they choose to do with the bonus. The most exciting report started with 1 person at a Starbucks drive thru window. That person paid for his coffee and the next person’s order, the next person paid for the one behind him and it continued throughout the day. This event has now continued for a week popping up in different cities across the U.S. The Wii brings a smile only to the lucky recipient and a frown to those unlucky empty handed shoppers, but giving to others brings a smile to the face of the recipient and a lasting sense of fulfillment to the giver.
It didn’t really start with a Cabbage Patch Doll, a Rubik’s Cube, I-Phone or any other “can’t live without” gadget that will be replaced with the “latest and greatest” in 6 months. The Spirit of Giving started over 2000 years ago with a Baby in a Manger. Isaiah said “For unto us a Son is born, and unto us a Child is given. John said “For God so loved the world that He gave his only begotten son. The beautiful thing about God’s gift is that it isn’t available to just those with enough money, or those lucky enough to be first in line but as John 3:16 continues, “ That Whosever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. God’s gift is available for whoever will receive it today.

IT'S NOT SO DIFFERENT
In 1977 Joan Ewing wrote a song, with the words, “It’ll Be Different. “
The first time You cameTo a stable long ago
They pushed You aside
For they really didn't know
Who had come to their world
To save and to heal
So they followed You
And Your cross to the top of the hill
But it'll be diff'rent
The next time You come
Wait and see
You got a lot of lonely children
And one of them is me
You know we want to see You
We're never really at home
So if You're waiting to be invited
Lord Jesus please come
It is a beautiful song, but I wonder if society will be so different when Jesus comes the second time. The world seems at times to be a mirror-image of a world 2000 years ago. The Jews were looking for the long awaited Messiah, but couldn’t accept that the Messiah would come in a way that was outside their little box. Today our box consists of believing that the God we’ve created would never allow evil and suffering or require anything that differs from our selfish desires. Authors are writing books with titles like “God is Not Great” or “The God Delusion.” The great delusion is not the ignorant belief in God, Mr. Dawkins; it is the delusion that causes mankind to believe that we are okay on our own with no need of a Savior.
For some of us, thankfully, it will be different. Hebrews 9:28 says He will appear the second time to them that look for Him. Whether we say Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays, Jesus is going to return. We can ignore the nativity and celebrate with trees, lights, and Santa, you may skip Christmas altogether and go straight for Kwanza, but it will not stop His return. Jesus will RETURN the second time, but He will APPEAR only to those who are looking for Him. Jesus, the world isn’t so different from your birth, but this time you have a small welcoming party just waiting for the angel to herald your coming.

IT'S NOT MY FAULT
I’m fat, it’s McDonald’s fault. I made bad grades; it’s the teacher’s fault. I’m late for work; I’m not a morning person. I’m in debt; it’s the credit card company’s fault. I’m mad; it’s my husband’s fault. IT’S NOT MY FAULT!!!!
I can’t help it! I was born that way! It just happened! If she/he hadn’t said that! He/she did it first! If this hadn’t happened when I was a child! My Dad/Mom was an alcoholic, drug user, abusive, workaholic, cheater, liar and thief? I was raised in a bad environment! I wasn’t hugged enough as a child! I was hugged too much! I was in a hurry! I’m Irish, German, Scottish, Indian, Hispanic, Russian, Middle Eastern! I’m white, black, brown, red, green, purple! I’m poor! He’s just a man! I’m a woman! I’m Pentecostal, Catholic, Baptist, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, Atheist! The devil made me do it! These are some of the excuses I’ve heard. I’m sure there are thousands more.
Some of my parent’s favorite sayings were, “If she jumped off a bridge, would you too.” Or “I’m not her mom/dad” or “In our family we have different rules.” I remember being so angry at how unfair everything was for me, yet so protected that my parents cared enough to say NO. Also, I was punished for disobeying. Believe me it wasn’t always a time out and never “Positive Diversion or Reinforcements.” Punishment was handed out swiftly and with a strong message that I wouldn’t soon forget.
Being raised in a Permissive Environment may be getting a little closer to a legitimate excuse. Children are being raised to be narcissistic. Parents treat their kids as if they are the center of the universe. How can the center of the universe do anything wrong? Children aren’t told their behavior is unacceptable. It might hurt their self-esteem. If children are spanked when they misbehave, they will turn in to abusers. If a child chooses to let their sin-nature show, reason with them by giving them the correct options. These theories appear in child-rearing books, written by authors that obviously never dealt with a 2, 5, 10, or 16 year old. As a result of parents raising their children based on psychological philosophy instead of Biblical philosophy, we have raised a generation of monsters.
Thursday, a young man walked into a mall and killed 8 people. His suicide note said “I just snapped.” Violence isn’t limited to young men; recent reports state that aggression on the rise in women. Previously, 1 woman for every 10 men was arrested for violence; it has now progressed to 1 woman for every 4 men. On Thursday a group of young women attacked a man on a subway because he accidently stepped on a foot. The young man who had been raised in a non-permissive environment said he did not fight back because his mother had taught him not to hit girls. IT WORKS!!!! Our kids can learn right from wrong, but these principles must be taught.
We may not want there to be any consequences for our actions, but the Bible clearly states that the opposite is true. Ezekiel 18:4 says “The man who sins shall die.” Choose life, take responsibility and let the Holy Spirit give you the power to change. Your children will thank you (eventually).
